Gas logs will not light
A no-start complaint can involve the pilot assembly, thermocouple, thermopile, millivolt generator, spark electrode, piezo igniter, remote receiver, wall switch, gas valve or fuel-supply condition. The exact control system determines which components are actually present.
Gas log pilot will not stay lit
A weak or unstable pilot can be associated with pilot condition, flame contact with the sensing device, fuel pressure, vent-free ODS behavior, safety controls or a failing component. The rating plate and control-system identification come before a parts guess.
Burner will not ignite
Sometimes the pilot remains on while the main burner does not respond. Useful details include whether a wall switch works, whether the remote receiver clicks, whether the remote is intermittent, and whether the burner has ever operated correctly with the present control setup.
Gas logs shut off after a few minutes
Intermittent operation can be tied to pilot/safety circuits, vent-free shutdown behavior, controls, pressure, heat-related component issues or other appliance-specific conditions. Repeatedly relighting the appliance without understanding the cause is not a repair strategy.
Soot, odor and flame complaints
Searches such as gas logs making soot, black soot above gas fireplace, gas logs smell when burning, gas logs have a low flame are useful symptom descriptions. They do not identify the cause by themselves. Vented and vent-free appliances have different intended flame characteristics and operating requirements.
