Standing pilot, intermittent pilot and electronic ignition
Some gas fireplaces use a standing pilot and millivolt controls. Others use intermittent pilot ignition or electronic control modules. A homeowner may describe all of them as “the pilot,” but the service path can be very different.
Common pilot-related symptoms
- Pilot will not light.
- Pilot lights but will not stay lit.
- Pilot flame is too small or unstable.
- Fireplace starts, then shuts down.
- Igniter clicks but the pilot does not establish.
- Wall switch or remote works intermittently because the safety/control circuit is unstable.
Model and control identification
Manufacturers represented in Pinnacle’s private technical reference include current and legacy fireplace families plus control systems from SIT/Proflame, Skytech, Resideo/Honeywell, Robertshaw, Maxitrol and Dexen. A brand name alone is not enough to identify the correct pilot assembly or valve.
Do not keep attempting to light a suspected leak
If you smell gas or suspect an active leak, leave the area and handle the emergency first. Schedule repair only after the immediate hazard has been addressed.
